Peter Cotter, Partner

Since 2011, Peter has aided the residents of the Eastern Shore in resolving their civil litigation issues.  Peter has experience in a wide array of civil litigation fields, including divorce and child custody, guardianships, contract disputes, landlord-tenant disputes, consumer debt, estate and trust litigation, land use and planning, administrative applications and appeals, Peace Orders, and Protective Orders.  Peter is also specially trained and often appointed by courts to represent minor children in custody disputes.  In addition to extensive trial experience, Peter also has experience in drafting appellate briefs and making oral arguments on various briefs and motions. 

 

Peter is committed to serving the residents of the Eastern Shore.  Peter has been recognized for his pro bono contributions to the Eastern Shore, being named the Mid Shore Pro Bono Young Attorney of the Year in 2011 and the Maryland Pro Bono Service Alex Fee Memorial Award from the Young Lawyers Section of the Maryland State Bar Association in 2013.  He volunteered as the Chairman of the Town of Easton Board of Zoning Appeals from 2015 to 2025, and was inducted as a Fellow of the Maryland Bar Foundation in 2020.  The Supreme Court of Maryland appointed Peter to the Character Committee for the First Appellate Circuit in 2024 and to the Attorney Grievance Committee in 2025.  In 2024, Peter was nominated as a finalist for Judge of the Circuit Court for Talbot County by the Trial Courts Nominating Commission.    

 

Peter is a native of Buffalo, New York, and an avid Buffalo sports fan.  In 2010, Peter graduated cum laude from SUNY Buffalo Law School, where he was a member of the law review.  Before attending law school, Peter graduated magna cum laude from Bucknell University in 2007, where he played four years of football.  Peter is licensed to practice law in New York, Maryland, the U.S. District Court for the District of Maryland, and the U.S. Court of Appeals for the 4th Circuit.
